Emerging B2B case data: the central role of regulators in creating value in Fintech ecosystems

Authors: Hugh M. Pattinson; Suresh C. Sood

The role of regulators is increasingly important in the future state of on-line business networks. As businesses such as Airbnb, Tesla, Uber become network ‘orchestrators’, regulators seek similar roles and influence within their industries and markets. From an IMP perspective, regulators go beyond being a neutral actor in networks, toward seeking to influence, shape, facilitate or expedite future industry and market development. A paucity of research exists on the interaction of regulators in business networks and IMP theory, but if regulators are important for future market or industry development then this research is urgent. This paper explores regulators in the highly disruptive financial technology (FinTech) industry using examples of Regtech “Sandboxes” as initial case studies. Key questions stemming from regulator activities globally help trigger a research agenda for the IMP community focusing on the role of regulators within IMP interaction models, and technology transforming, disrupting or reshaping industry B2B interactions.
