The role of corporate partners within innovation incubators

Authors: Bella Butler; Daniel Schepis; Sharon Purchase

Innovation incubators were developed to foster start-up companies, improving their probability of survival and therefore, optimising the innovation potential within start-up communities. This research focuses on the role of corporate partners within incubators and how start-ups perceive the advantages of incubator processes that facilitate the networking between start-ups and corporate partners who both view this relationships as beneficial. Given this research is exploratory, a single case study was conducted within an incubator focusing within the financial services sector. Our findings indicate that start-ups use their relationships with corporate partners extensively within their innovation and business development. In particular, start-ups use these relationships for finding potential customers, focusing the innovation opportunities and assistance with researching potential markets. Another finding is that the “eco-system” aspects of the incubator are not developing with the atmosphere between start-ups lacking collegiality and start-ups acting as individuals rather than as a community.
