This research explores the dynamic nature of coopetition in a network context. Evidence from a single, longitudinal case study in the optical recording media industry is used to contextualize coopetition in a network context. The case illustrates the significance of connectedness of relationships and that the need to create and appropriate value drives actors’ coopetitive behaviors. Our findings show that coopetition between two actors within a relationship can only be understood within the context of the wider network in which the relationship is embedded. The results broaden the existing view of coopetition beyond the dyadic level. We see that the contradictory logics of cooperation and competition can be accommodated in a firm’s process of relating its resources and activities to others and the overall value creation process but that the locus and type of value creation change as a result of this. We acknowledge that not all coopetitive relationships evolve along this path and identify critical factors that cause such changes.
