The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of multilateral institutions in theinternationalisation of consulting providers. Existing theories on the internationalisation of servicefirms contrast client-following and market-seeking influences on the internationalisation ofservice firms. This study of consulting providers to multilateral institutions suggests that bothclient following and market seeking are significant internationalisation trajectories, and thatinternationalisation decisions are best understood in the firm’s broader network context.
