Transport efficiency in supply networks: the impact of network horizons and network contexts

Authors: Ann-Charlott Pedersen; Kajsa Hulthén; Victor Eriksson

The increasing focus on climate change and CO2 emissions has set transport efficiency at the top of the agenda for industrial as well as societal actors. In this paper, transport efficiency is approached from a triadic perspective by using the transport service triad (TST) as a conceptual tool. The TST connects the exchange of goods between a seller and buyer of goods with the exchange of transport services between a seller and buyer of transport services. This connection results from the exchange of goods which generates a demand for transport services. The paper relies on a case study of a TST involving a technical wholesaler of installation products, a large construction firm and a transport service provider. The aim of the paper is to understand various actors’ perspectives on transport efficiency as well as challenges and tensions in a TST.
