Sinking out of the box: a network analysis of shipwrecks

Authors: Alexandre Lavissiere; Olivier Lasmoles; Tibor Mandjak

The paper deals with the relations between business and non-business actors in the business network. International maritime business network has been chosen because of the important presence of non-business actors: i.e. national and international authorities and regulations. The general problem of how non-business actors influence business networks is studied in the international maritime network. The course and the legal responsibilities for two shipwrecks that happened in the last decade in French waters is analyzed from a network point of view. Results show that the shipwrecks, as network outcomes, are the unexpected consequences of international maritime actors networking presumably and at least partially rooted in the narrow network pictures of involved actors, especially non-business actors as authorities or states.
