Exchange is not a simple mechanism but based on thick interaction: on the need for estimating and analysing heaviness

Authors: Alexandra Waluszewski; Håkan Håkansson

Business interaction is not a simple mechanism but has a certain substance, something that has far reaching consequences for efficiency and renewal. This is one of the main observations made in the IMP research field, acknowledged already in the first study (Håkansson ed 1982) and one of the key aspects in the second one (Håkansson & Snehota 1995). In this paper we discuss how the substance of interaction have been captured and estimated, in the above mentioned studies and in a larger study on innovation and industrial renewal reported in Håkansson & Waluszewski (2002). Three specific questions are highlighted. The first why it is important to estimate the substance of interaction, expressed in terms of heaviness. The second how it has been estimated in these studies. The third question concerns the need for better estimations. The conclusion of the paper is that the heaviness created through business interaction is a key aspect in economic analysis.
