The Emergence of Inconsistent Norms in Buyer-Supplier Relations in the Apparel Industry

Authors: Ulla Normann

The paper explores the set of norms governing the relational exchange between suppliers and buying companies in the textile and apparel industry and along with the changes that have occurred in these norms with the introduction of sustainability requirements over the past 5-10 years. Norms play a significant role in contractual and relational exchanges. Determining the behavior present in those exchanges. Since sustainability requirements began to be introduced in the textile and apparel industry, suppliers have seen buying companies’ behaviors gradually change toward a more discrete behavior. To illuminate this change and its basis in an evolving set of norms related to sustainability, we interviewed 30 suppliers/manufacturers in the apparel industry in India, Bangladesh, and China. Our findings reveal that a change has occurred in the norm set, by which it has separated into two, the previously-existing norm set and a sustainability-related norm set.
