Network configuration: Exploring the role of social capital

Authors: Christopher J. Medlin; Nurul Efifi Mohamad Ngasri

Existing studies in the IMP tradition shed light on the importance of substantive interaction between firms in a network, nevertheless our understanding of the role of social capital within the economic sphere remains limited. More particularly, the potential of social capital as an underpinning connection that can be drawn upon to effect network change is underexplored. The interplay between social capital and network change provides an interesting avenue to understand the concept of networking actors, which is implied but not sufficiently discussed within IMP. This paper seeks to explore the role of social capital in business networks over time, as socially embedded actors re-configure their network. In this paper we apply the point mapping approach within a longitudinal case study to explicate phases of change within a business network. Our theoretical perspective draws upon a case study of a technical training company in Malaysia which becomes more embedded in a well-established business network over time by leveraging on social capital.
