Entrepreneurial firms’ strategizing for network capability in use

Authors: Helen McGrath; Thomas O’Toole

We contribute to the literature by examining how entrepreneurial firms strategize in using network capability borrowing two potential developmental pathways from the strategic management literature, emergent and deliberate (Mintzberg, 1978: Mintzberg and Waters, 1985). Qualitative data in the form of semi-structured interviews and company documentation was collected for the two longitudinal case studies forming the empirical base for this paper over a ten year period. Findings suggest that entrepreneurs can strategize network capability, either in an emergent or deliberate way for: (i) network positioning, (ii) legitimacy and reputation, and (iii) building momentum in networks. Our paper adds to the growing body of literature which places interaction, relationships and networks at the heart of strategy making and provide important insights for entrepreneurs, which may lead to earlier and greater success for new ventures.
