This paper focuses on the role of research and development (R&D) collaboration between technology-based start-ups and customers. It takes its empirical starting point in one illustrative case study and additionally draws on other similar cases. Our focal case deals with Oxeon, a rapidly growing university spin-off. The purpose is to take this case as a point of departure for describing and analyzing how technology-based start-ups can use R&D collaboration with customers as a means for developing the product, introducing it into the market, and building a successful business. The paper identifies and discusses a number of central issues which form the base for formulating propositions for further research.
