A MULTILEVEL PERSPECTIVE ON CONFLICT MANAGEMENT IN VERTICAL COOPETITION

Authors: Anni Rajala; Annika Tidström

Conflicts are natural in coopetitive business relationships and there is a recent call for more research about conflict management in coopetition. The purpose of this study is to analyze conflict management in vertical coopetition from a multilevel perspective. The empirical part of the paper is based on a qualitative single case study of a coopetitive buyer-supplier relationship within the manufacturing industry. The study contributes to existing research on tensions in coopetition by focusing on coopetition between a buyer and a seller, a multilevel perspective on types of conflicts and the managing of tensions. The findings of the study show that communication conflicts occur and are managed on multiple levels, whereas productrelated conflicts mostly occur on relational level and are managed on an organizational level. Communication conflicts are managed in a more constructive and cooperative style, whereas product-related conflicts are mostly managed in a more destructive and competitive way.
