Terminating relationships in business networks? Reflections on business strategy

Authors: Jan-Åke Törnroos

Ending of business relationships in industrial markets can be seen asoutcome of temporally specific events in time-space affected by precedingevents and anticipated future events in a specific situational context. Inbusiness-network terms one relationship is connected to otherrelationships. These connections are not only actor based but also timebased(past loaded through earlier experiences and future loaded throughanticipated expectations). If we understand time through event trajectoriesaffecting the ending of one relationship it also has to affect otherrelationships in the network. This relates especially to mutual connectionof the firms who are dissolving/terminating their business relationships. This conceptual paper outlines perspectives on how to look at ending ofbusiness relationships from a temporal perspective and suggests avenuesfor doing research in the area of business networks.
