Learning is arguably a central managerial concern. To facilitate a fruitful learning environment, it appears as if managers face paradoxical demands ? they need to balance both stabilising and destabilising factors. From a network perspective, this conceptual paper regards the concepts of organizational identity, network identification, and the roles of trust, in dealing with this challenge. Drawing on March’s (1991) distinction of exploitation and exploration, the paper presents a number of trade-offs and traps that managers face when maintaining and developing a learning environment.
