THE INTERNATIONAL EVOLUTION OF A MEDIUM-SIZED MANUFACTURING FIRM: A NETWORK PERSPECTIVE

This paper, by means of a case study, traces the international evolution of James N. KirbyPty. Ltd., a medium-sized family-owned Australian manufacturing firm. Its internationalinvolvement is charted from the firm’s establishment almost eighty years ago as anorganisation to supply, in turn, the domestic market, international markets from Australia,international markets from overseas operations, the Australian market from its overseasoperations, and finally its acquisition by overseas interests.In order to describe this evolution the network approach is utilised. It is illustrated how thenetworks in which the firm was embedded at each stage led to each subsequent stage ofinternational involvement.
