The Impact of Different Types of Innovations on Industrial

Authors: Jens Mörchel; Sandra Luthardt

In this paper, we analyse the implications of different types of innovations on industrialnetworks. In literature there can often be found great enthusiasm about the positive effects ofnetworks or knowledge clusters on competitive positions of firms. However we argue that tooclose interaction between actors in a network can bring about severe consequences insituations of technological change. We use an innovation typology put forward by Hendersonand Clark and illustrate our thoughts with the example of the market for Programmable LogicControllers (PLC).
